How to Get Out of Survival Mode: What Mindsight Taught Me About Freedom

Sometimes I begin my practice by putting on my blackout mask and reading a letter out loud. It's addressed to Freedom, and it opens: "Dear Freedom, thank you for reminding me that you have always lived within me."

The letter releases the need to control, to prove, or to force my way forward. It chooses curiosity over certainty, possibility over limitation, and love over fear. By the time I finish, I can feel the difference in my body.

That shift is what this post is about. When people ask me how to get out of survival mode, the place where fear, control, and overthinking run the show, I don't start with a technique. I start with a question: what state am I in right now, and what would it take to choose a different one?

I learned this most clearly through Mindsight, the ability to perceive the world without relying on your physical eyes. But I've come to believe the lesson reaches far beyond the mask.

By the end of this post, you'll understand the difference between protection and creation, why effort so often keeps you stuck, and a simple check-in you can use to shift your state.

How to Get Out of Survival Mode: Freedom Is a Frequency

In my experience, getting out of survival mode is less about achieving something and more about shifting your state, from fear, control, and overthinking into curiosity, trust, and play. I think of freedom as a frequency you can choose to access rather than a place you finally arrive.

Most of us spend a lot of our lives operating from survival. Fear, control, doubt, overthinking, stress, and limitation become so familiar that we stop noticing them. What I see is that these states keep us locked into what I call the protective personality: the part of us built over years to keep us safe. It does its job well, but in doing so it can disconnect us from our natural abilities.

I've come to see everything as a frequency: your thoughts, your emotions, your beliefs, your expectations, your attention. You're always broadcasting something. What matters is which frequency you're broadcasting.

So freedom, the way I teach it, begins the moment you stop operating from survival and start creating from consciousness. It isn't about learning something new. It's about remembering who you are underneath the conditioning, the fear, and the survival patterns.

What Is the Difference Between Protection and Creation?

Protection is the state of fear, control, doubt, and hypervigilance, and in my experience it narrows perception. Creation is the state of curiosity, trust, wonder, and play, and it tends to widen it.

In the frequency of protection, your awareness focuses on threat and survival. Judgment, resistance, and scarcity are all part of it. Everything gets smaller.

In the frequency of creation, things open. Here's how I describe the shift:

  • Creativity replaces control

  • Trust replaces fear

  • Presence replaces overthinking

  • Possibility replaces limitation

  • Intuition becomes accessible

When people move into that state, I notice their perception expanding, their intuition strengthening, and new possibilities becoming available to them. Gratitude, joy, wonder, and connection all live here too.

Your protector isn't the enemy. We all have one. The invitation is simply to stop letting it lead. I write more about living from protection versus creation in How to Trust Your Intuition.

Why Does Trying Harder Keep You Stuck?

Effort usually comes from the protective state, so pushing harder tends to keep you right where you are. In Mindsight practice, I see it constantly: when people are relaxed, playful, and curious, information flows, and when they try too hard, it often disappears.

I think of this as the law of resonance. You don't reach expanded perception through force. You reach it by becoming an emotional match for the experience you want to have.

Resonance is like tuning a radio. The station already exists. You simply have to tune yourself to the right frequency to receive it.

If you've ever explored manifestation, this may sound familiar: the idea that you feel your way into an experience before it arrives. When your nervous system feels calm, open, playful, and trusting, many people find they naturally become a match for something more.

Mindsight works this way for me. The ability isn't created through effort. It becomes available when I enter the state that matches it. And I've come to wonder whether a lot of life works the same way.

Why Do Children Seem to Live in Creation So Naturally?

What I often notice is that children spend much more of their time in curious, playful, present states, and they haven't yet built the protective personality adults have spent years constructing.

They're imaginative and always wondering. They worry less about failing, less about being right or wrong, and less about how things will turn out.

So I invite you to become more childlike. Not a child, but childlike: open, curious, present, playful, and willing to explore. In my experience, that childlike state is one of the most powerful states available to any of us, at any age.

How Do You Shift Your State in the Moment?

Move, laugh, play, and come back to the present. The goal is not perfection. It is alignment.

These are the things I see shift people out of protection most reliably:

  • Move your body. Somatic movement, dancing, or exercise

  • Laugh. This is one reason I love Mindsight sessions so much. We laugh constantly, and it truly is childlike

  • Play. Treat it as something to explore, not something to get right

  • Express gratitude, for yourself or for someone else

  • Connect with other people

  • Practice presence. Come right back into this moment

  • Follow your inspiration, and let yourself enter a flow state

  • Release judgment, of yourself and of the process

One of my favorite ways to practice this with Mindsight is to skip the formal setup entirely. I'll randomly grab my mask and throw it on like a kid, with no expectations at all. When I'm playing instead of performing, that's when perception tends to open the widest. If you'd like the practical side of developing Mindsight, I share more in How to Develop Mindsight.

Try This Practice

Here's a quick frequency check I teach. I use it before Mindsight practice, but you can use it before anything that matters to you: a creative project, a hard conversation, a decision.

  1. Pause before you begin and take one slow breath.

  2. Ask yourself honestly: Am I in fear or curiosity? Am I trying to prove something? Am I attached to the outcome? Am I playing or performing? Am I open or contracted?

  3. Notice your answers without judging them. They're information, not a grade.

  4. If you feel contracted, choose one shift: stand up and move, find something that makes you laugh, name one thing you're grateful for, or simply bring your attention back into the room around you.

  5. Read a few lines out loud, from my letter or one you write yourself: "I choose curiosity over certainty. I choose possibility over limitation. I choose love over fear."

  6. Ask the questions again and notice what has changed.

  7. Begin, playing rather than performing.

What to notice: how your answers line up with how things go. In my experience, the frequency check often predicts how a practice session will unfold, and that alone can make it easier to choose your state before you start.

The Seeing Is Just the Evidence

Most people come to Mindsight because they want to see without their eyes. And honestly, it is so cool. But what I've found it's really teaching them is how to shift states: from fear to trust, from contraction to expansion, from protection to creation.

The seeing is simply the evidence that the shift happened.

So I'm curious what else might open for you as you practice leaving survival mode, even a little at a time. As my letter puts it, I don't have to chase expanded perception. I simply become the version of myself who is open to it.

You may find, as I have, that your greatest potential has been with you all along.
