The Five Bodies of Consciousness: How Awareness May Shape Healing
When something feels off in our health or our lives, most of us start with the body. We look for the physical cause and try to fix it at that level. That's how most of us were taught, and the body truly matters.
But when I began studying natural medicine, my questions kept reaching past the body. One framework has stayed with me ever since: the five bodies of consciousness. It describes you not as one physical body, but as five layers of awareness, from your senses all the way to your connection to spirit.
Years later, teaching children and adults Mindsight, that framework came back to me with new force. I kept seeing people perceive things they had been certain were impossible, and I kept asking what else might be possible for them.
So what might change if healing began at the top of those layers instead of the bottom?
In this post, you'll learn what the five bodies of consciousness are, why I believe healing may work from the top down, and a simple practice I teach for releasing what you've been carrying.
What Are the Five Bodies of Consciousness?
The five bodies of consciousness are a model from quantum medicine that describes a person as five layers: the physical, vital, mental, super mental, and bliss bodies. Each layer holds a different kind of experience, from your five senses to a sense of wholeness and connection.
Picture them stacked from bottom to top. Here is how I describe each one.
The physical body
This is the body you already know, and the layer you experience through your five senses. When you visit a doctor, this is usually where the attention goes: the symptoms you're displaying and what can be seen and measured.
The vital body
This is where your life force energy and your emotions live. It holds the energetic exchange between you and the world, and many people connect it with the meridians described in traditional Chinese medicine.
The mental body
This is the layer of thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions. Images, symbols, and information take shape here. I think of it as the bridge between intuitive perception and conscious thought.
The super mental body
This is your intuition, your higher knowing, and what I call non-local perception: perception that isn't limited to where your body is. It's where you access deeper levels of information.
The bliss body
At the very top is the bliss body: connection, wholeness, and expanded consciousness. For me, this is your connection to spirit, and the place where perception may move beyond time, space, and form.
What makes this model so meaningful to me is where Mindsight lives in it. In my experience, Mindsight develops through these upper levels.
How Might Consciousness Influence Healing?
In the model I teach from, change at the higher levels of consciousness may influence the levels below: your thoughts, your emotions, and your physical body. This is sometimes called downward causation. I hold it as a possibility worth exploring, not as a promise.
Many of us learned a bottom-up picture in school. Elementary particles form atoms, atoms form molecules, molecules form cells, cells form the brain, and consciousness sits at the very end, as something the brain produces.
The quantum medicine model I studied turns that picture over. Consciousness comes first. Then the brain, then the cells, the molecules, and the atoms. In this view, the lower layers are expressions of the higher ones.
The way I understand it, the higher, subtler levels can reach all the way down into the lower levels, while the lower levels don't reach up into the higher ones. That is why I find this model so hopeful. When you step into those upper levels through a practice like Mindsight, you may be working with your whole system at once.
I want to be careful here. This isn't medical treatment, and it isn't a replacement for care from your doctor. What I'm describing is an invitation to include the parts of you that conventional care usually leaves out: your emotions, your beliefs, your awareness, and your sense of connection. Many people tell me that working at these levels changes how they feel and how they see their own lives.
Where Does Mindsight Fit?
Mindsight is the innate human ability to perceive the world without relying on your physical eyes. It is trainable and repeatable, it's available to both children and adults, and I see it as a natural state of awareness we all carry.
For most people, it opens in two stages:
Intuitive Mindsight. An inner knowing, a felt sense, or a subtle impression that arrives before anything visual. For many people, this is the first doorway.
Real-time Mindsight. Seeing without the physical eyes, with clear shapes, movement, and depth. It usually develops after intuitive perception and strengthens with practice.
If you'd like the practical side of developing it, I share more in How to Develop Mindsight.
My own path here started long before I had the word Mindsight. As the mother of a non-speaking son, I learned to listen beyond words, and that is what first led me into natural medicine. When I later discovered Mindsight, something bigger came together for me. Mindsight, intuition, telepathy, and our capacity for healing all seemed to point to one question: how much of our human potential hasn't been explored yet?
So for me, Mindsight became more than perceiving without the eyes. It became a doorway into exploring consciousness itself.
Why Does Shifting Your State Matter?
In my experience, the analytical mind keeps most of us living in protection and survival. Learning to soften it, even for a few minutes, gives you access to the more intuitive and receptive layers where I believe deeper change can begin.
The analytical mind is the part of you that analyzes, categorizes, predicts, controls, and compares everything to what you already know. It's incredibly useful. But in Mindsight practice, it becomes the voice that asks: Is this possible? Am I doing this right? There has to be another explanation.
What Mindsight asks is that you loosen your attachment to that analysis for a while. I describe the shift like this:
From analysis to experience
From control to receptivity
From prediction to curiosity
From thinking to perceiving
From effort to allowing
The goal is not to eliminate your analytical mind. It's to learn that you don't have to live there all the time.
As you practice, you stop living so fully in your protective personality and begin stepping into the intuitive, creative, spiritual side of yourself. You begin questioning what you thought was possible. You begin challenging your limits. And your relationship with consciousness itself starts to change. That, to me, is where the real power begins.
How Do You Begin Practicing?
Start relaxed, keep sessions short, and let things come to you instead of forcing them. In my experience, a few calm, playful minutes a day open more than a long, effortful session.
Relax first. A short visualization, meditation, or activation helps calm the analytical mind.
Work with light. With a blackout mask on, slowly turn your head and notice any areas that seem brighter.
Allow instead of forcing. Stay curious and open, and let go of the outcome.
Keep it short. Ten to fifteen minutes a day builds these pathways faster than long, irregular sessions, because the analytical mind has less time to step in and question.
Write it down. Right after you practice, journal what you noticed. When your analytical mind later insists nothing happened, it's documented.
Try This Practice
Here's a short version of an activation I teach for settling the body, expanding your awareness, and releasing what you've been carrying. You can wear a blackout mask or simply close your eyes.
Sit comfortably and take a deep breath in, then slowly exhale. Repeat once more.
Let your shoulders drop away from your ears, soften your jaw, and feel your body settle.
Rub your hands together and keep rubbing. Picture a radiant energy field around you, your aura, and let light flow from your heart to fill it a little more with each breath.
Let your aura expand until it fills the entire room, stretching out easily in every direction.
Stop rubbing your hands and extend your arms out to the sides, as if you're letting go of everything you've been carrying. Feel your heart expand as you release whatever no longer serves you.
Send your light out in every direction, to the stars, the moon, the sun, and every planet. Let anything that has made you sad, unhappy, or frustrated travel out with it.
Slowly lower your arms and bring that openness back with you. Silently remind yourself: I am present. I am whole. I am connected to the wisdom within.
Stay for a few more breaths. Let colors, images, and sensations arise without judgment, and trust what you feel more than what you think. If you're wearing a mask, slowly turn your head and notice any spot that seems a little brighter.
What to notice: how your body feels after the release, and anything that appears without your trying. In my experience, that sense of lightness is a wonderful place to begin any practice.
What If the Power Has Been Within You All Along?
I often ask the people I work with to sit with a simple question. What if the capacity to heal, create, and change your life has been with you all along? What if you are far more powerful than you've ever allowed yourself to believe?
I don't think that capacity is something we have to get from outside ourselves. I believe it's already part of who we are, waiting to be awakened, cultivated, and expressed. Our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and intentions shape how we experience our lives more than most of us were taught.
Perhaps the deepest change begins when we stop looking only outside ourselves for answers and start recognizing what has always been within. You don't have to believe any of this to begin. I simply invite you to get curious about what becomes possible when you do.
